Damn this book is big. In fact, my hand still hurts from holding it while reading it. If ever there were a bible for baseball, this is it. In fact, while reading through its pages, I felt the Holy Spirit of Baseball take over me. I started speaking in tongues but I sounded more like an umpire in the thick of a glorious battle on the diamond. Needless to say, reading this book was a spiritual experience that unlocked doors in my soul.
Sure, maybe I am exaggerating just a bit, but this book is the bible of baseball: without question. It covers so much and in great detail. Yes, it is about 1000 pages and large pages at that but it leaves no stone unturned and meticulously goes through baseball decade by decade and position by position. There is even a fantastic chapter on the Negro Leagues and the best Negro League players. There is so much that this book discusses, that it would be impossible to run through it all.
Bill James has written the most important and vital book for the collections of book lovers and baseball aficionados. You really can’t have a library on baseball, or sports for that matter, and not have this massive beast in it. No diehard baseball fan or history buff’s life can be complete without this in their possession. I know I am repeating myself but I really need to emphasize the greatness of The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract.
As large as it is, I was able to find a copy on Amazon for a few bucks (plus $4 shipping). Despite its encyclopedic size, you can find an affordable one out there.
Pairs well with: Baseball Between the Numbers by The Baseball Prospectus Team of Experts, The SABR Baseball List & Record Book by The Society for American Baseball Research
